14 May BBM Team Inspires Future Engineers at Galileo School for Gifted Learning
The future of engineering starts with curiosity, and during the 2026 Engineers Week, two members of the BBM team had the opportunity to help spark that curiosity in the classroom.
Austin Scott, PE, Project Engineer, and Maggie Kirk, PE, Project Manager, visited gifted students at Galileo School for Gifted Learning for a special presentation focused on structural engineering, career pathways, and the role engineers play in shaping the world around us. The visit was coordinated through BBM industry partner Johnathan Wilkes of Scorpio Construction, whose daughter attends the school. It created a meaningful connection between students and professionals actively working in the construction industry. Led by Ms. Ramya Nataraj, Middle School STEM Instructor, students have been exploring structures, bridge design, forces on buildings, material strength, natural disaster resistance, and the engineering design process. BBM’s presentation helped connect those lessons to real-world applications and real career opportunities.
Austin and Maggie shared why structural engineering is so important and how engineers help protect public safety by designing buildings, schools, bridges, and other structures to withstand gravity, wind, and environmental forces. They also discussed how structural engineers collaborate with architects and contractors to turn ideas into safe, functional spaces. Students also learned about the path to becoming a licensed engineer, including higher education, professional exams, hands-on experience, and the dedication required to earn a Professional Engineer license. To bring engineering concepts to life, students participated in a hands-on spaghetti and marshmallow bridge challenge, applying teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving in a fun and memorable way.
For BBM, opportunities like this matter. Encouraging students to explore engineering at an early age helps build confidence, broaden career awareness, and inspire the next generation of problem solvers. We appreciate Galileo School Gifted Learning, Ms. Nataraj, and Scorpio Construction for inviting BBM to be part of such a valuable experience. We are proud of Austin and Maggie for representing BBM so well during the 2026 Engineers Week.
