12 Feb Collaborative Design Leads to National Recognition for Combined School
The combined Michigan Avenue Elementary & St. Cloud Middle School campus has been recognized for its innovative design. It was featured in the November/December 2024 edition of American School & University—2024 Architectural Portfolio. The project, highlighted on pages 56-57, was selected as an Outstanding Design for Combined Level Schools, showcasing its commitment to creating a modern and efficient learning environment.
Designed by Song + Associates with invaluable structural engineering support from BBM Structural professionals and other contributing firms, the campus cleverly integrates two separate schools onto a single 21-acre site. This innovative approach maximizes shared resources, resulting in significant cost savings—estimated at $2 million—and a smaller overall footprint.
This efficiency extends to community use, with a shared multipurpose/dining building adaptable for large or small events. Media centers are easily accessible, and every learning space, including specialized labs and classrooms, has smart boards. Technology is further integrated with laptop charging stations and a campus-wide wireless network. The design also incorporates numerous sustainable features, from high-performance building materials and energy-efficient systems to environmentally friendly interior finishes.
BBM Structural Engineering played a crucial role in the success of this project, demonstrating the invaluable contribution of structural engineering to the creation of modern educational facilities. We understand the importance of creating safe, functional, and inspiring learning environments and deeply value our relationship with the School District of Osceola County and other academic institutions in Florida. We are proud to support their continued leadership in design and the advancement of learning. This recognition in American Schools & Universities demonstrates the collaborative effort and dedication that went into making this project a reality and a celebration of innovative educational design.
