14 Feb Celebrating Progress: BBM’s Role in Garner Academy’s STEM Facility Transformation

Luis Bedoya and Jose Galindo proudly represented BBM, along with Zyscovich Regional Director Alex Perez, at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Polk County Schools’ new STEM Facility, Garner Academy (elementary school). Originally built in 1955, the focus was to modernize and transform it into a new school with energy-efficient buildings and an innovative design fostering interactive, collaborative, and team-based learning.

With a construction budget of approximately $40M, BBM Structural’s team played a pivotal role in the project, providing expert structural design, detailing, and construction administration for the new construction and renovation of multiple buildings on this campus. Collaborating closely with the architects at Zyscovich and the construction team of A.D. Morgan, BBM ensured that the structural elements aligned seamlessly with the modernization goals of the project.

The ribbon cutting gathered many contributors to the project, from building and design to esteemed Polk County School Board members, where we celebrated the completion of the school’s modernization project. The project has resulted in an extensively revamped campus featuring a stunning new building that houses the main office, cafeteria, and 52 classrooms. As we reflect on our involvement in this transformative project, BBM remains committed to supporting educational initiatives that empower our youth and shape the future of our communities.

Along with the fresh campus, Garner converted to a magnet school this year, with a curriculum focusing on STEM education. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. It is an interdisciplinary approach that helps students succeed in college and their future careers. The focus of STEM education is hands-on, problem-based learning. This is just another great educational project that continues to solidify our commitment to supporting our youth and their development, giving them the tools for a real career and fulfilling life.
