Why Structural Site Observations Matter: A Look Inside BBM’s Work at UNF

Structural engineering extends beyond the design phase. As construction progresses, site observations play an important role in helping ensure that structural components are built in accordance with the approved plans and design intent.

At BBM Structural, our engineers regularly visit active construction sites to observe progress, evaluate structural elements, and coordinate with project teams as buildings take shape.

Why Site Observations Matter

Even with detailed engineering plans, construction requires ongoing coordination between engineers, architects, and contractors. Structural site observations provide an opportunity to review installed components, identify potential discrepancies, and address questions that arise during construction.

These visits allow engineers to evaluate visible structural work at key stages of construction and communicate observations to the project team. When conditions differ from the design documents, early identification helps support timely decisions and minimize potential impacts on subsequent work.

Site observations also complement the formal inspection and quality assurance processes that help maintain construction standards throughout a project’s development.

On Site at the University of North Florida

Recently, BBM team members Mark Matzinger, BIM Technician Sheyly Ramirez, and Intern James Wohlford visited the University of North Florida’s Student Support & Academic Building for a structural site observation.

Mark took the inspection process to new heights, conducting observations from an elevated lift while Sheyly and James documented the visit from below.

The $40.2 million project includes a three-story, 60,000-square-foot facility that will house academic advising, student success programs, career services, tutoring centers, and collaborative study areas. The building will also feature student lounges and a full-sized Chick-fil-A.

BBM is working alongside architect Schenkel Shultz and contractor Ajax on the project.

Supporting Quality Throughout Construction

Site observations provide valuable opportunities for communication and collaboration. By remaining involved as construction advances, structural engineers can help project teams address field conditions, clarify design requirements, and maintain alignment with the structural design.

For BBM, these visits are an important part of supporting successful project delivery and helping turn engineering plans into structures that serve their communities.
