13 Nov A Major Milestone for Marion County: Topping Out at South Marion High School
The structural bones are officially in place at South Marion High School, and BBM Structural was proud to be on site to celebrate the milestone. The recent Topping-out Celebration marked a significant step forward for this new 328,000-square-foot campus, set to become the first new public high school built in Marion County in over two decades.
This large-scale project is the result of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and a shared vision between Schenkel Shultz (architect), Wharton-Smith (general contractor), and VMG Construction, which is executing the tilt-up, cast-in-place, hollowcore, precast, and hardscape concrete scopes. As the structural engineer for the campus, BBM has worked closely with all partners to ensure that every structural component—from panel coordination to long-span layouts—supports both durability and future flexibility.
Representing BBM at the celebration were Principal and Project Manager Luis Bedoya, Project Engineer Caroline Wells, BIM Technician Nate Mittag, and Construction Administrator Tibi Camacho, each of whom has contributed to the steady progress and precision behind this complex build.
With classrooms, labs, administrative offices, athletic facilities, and community gathering spaces, this new high school reflects more than growth; it’s an investment in the long-term success of Marion County students, educators, and families.
BBM is proud to help bring this project to life and looks forward to seeing the structure transform into a vibrant, purpose-driven learning environment in the months ahead.
